V.S.L: Experimentando el Rock fusion

V.S.L. es el fruto de la unión de tres experimentados músicos de larga trayectoria y talento. En realidad el nombre de la banda responde a las iniciales de sus integrantes: Jaime “Hulk” Varela, en la guitarra; Octavio Salman, en la batería; y Jorge Lara, en el teclado. Sus nombres han aparecido constantemente en la cultura rockera desde los años noventa hasta la fecha. Ahora, juntos han consolidado un interesante y prometedor proyecto de rock fusión.
El trío unió sus fuerzas hace apenas un año. “V.S.L. nace el primero de enero de 2002 a las 5:00 a.m”, cuenta Varela. Sin embargo ya existía una fuerte amistad entre estos músicos que ya eran compañeros como parte de la banda de la solista pop rock Pamela Robin.
Hulk Varela tiene un currículum de bastante peso: Fue miembro de las bandas Pig, Lorena Cuerno, La Iguana, Aborígenes (proyecto activo) y el Gruve.
Octavio Salman ha formado parte también de la banda de Lorena Cuerno, La Pepa, Cuentos de Barro (proyecto del mítico “Chele” Oscar Menjívar), Circos Urbanos, Calle Vieja (grupo de cover$), y el Gruve.
Por su parte, Jorge Lara fue parte de grupos como Parcek, Ovni, El gruve y Protocolo 2 (proyecto activo).
V.S.L. bautiza su propuesta como una “fusión de rock con un poco de jazz”. Hasta ahora, cada uno de sus integrantes había formado parte de bandas cuyos géneros están bastante alejados de lo que actualmente están experimentando: un sonido con un alto grado de intelectualidad, complejidad y virtuosismo en la ejecución. “Se trata de un grupo que servirá para desarrollarnos más como músicos”, explica Lara.
Hasta la fecha V.S.L. tiene ya 10 composiciones instrumentales originales que son todo una experiencia sonora.
El grupo confiesa que entre sus influencias comunes se encuentra el Liquid Tensión Experiment a cargo de la gente de Dream Theather – una verdadera eminencia del rock progresivo –, compositores como Chick Corea y otros nombres importantes del rock clásico.
“Espontánea, preparada, personal”
Para los miembros de la banda estos son los tres adjetivos que describen con más claridad su propuesta musical. A pesar de que todos vienen de la cultura rock este proyecto se caracteriza por ser más expresivo y sutil. Ellos lo explican así: “Tiene que ver con la madurez que hemos alcanzado como músicos, vas evolucionando y vas dejando el rock. Queremos aprender otras cosas”, explican. A pesar de ello, entre canción y canción se puede experimentar la fuerte presencia y poder del rock en las bases melódicas.
En términos comparativos, los músicos de V.S.L. dicen estar en la misma sintonía de grupos como el Joel Barraza Trio (Jazz Rock) y Las Tres Ramas del Árbol (Jazz fusión), todos proyectos musicalmente vanguardistas en el país.
V.S.L. es una banda que de seguro dará mucho que hablar en este año. Sus miembros prometen que para este año la banda producirá un disco, así que ¡estén pendientes!.
